Light Insulaing FireBrick whose full name is mullite insulating firebrick, was created in last century. Since it was invented light weight insulating firebrick has been a kind of widely used industrial insulation product ,it has solved two big problems in high temperature industry named "high-temperature erosion" and "chemical attack", so till now the light weight insulating firebrick manufacturing and application still has a strong development momentum..

As regards to its application, firstly it is used as  a high temperature insulating layer. Secondly it is used at the hot surface as a back lining in the heat treatment equipments. Thirdly light weight insulating firebrick can reduce the thermal heat loss between two thermal layers and avoid the heat released directly to the air.  Why it can do this ?
1.Internally generated heat circulation which reduces the heat conduction
2.As it is a kind of low density material, its heat storage is low , this property can reduce the heat loss.

In the beginning, light weight insulating firebrick is widely used on periodic or cyclical heat treatment equipment , such as the down draft kilns, shuttle kilns.  And then it is gradually used in tunnel kilns and metallurgical blast furnace maturely. Obviously it has advantage of  high insulation properties and reducing the thickness of the furnace wall & the construction cost.

The name of light weight insulating firebrick is just compared to dense refractory bricks, the biggest difference with dense bricks is that light weight insulating firebrick is added some filler in, and then the fillers will be fully combusted at a high temperature condition, some pores will be formatted inside the bricks. This close pores are the best way of insulation and non -conductors. The gaps between irregular pores makes the heat conduction path more and more tortuous and difficult..

We may notice that there are many kinds of fillers could be used in the production of the insulating firebrick<IFB>, like flammable, volatile materials, sawdust, cork, polystyrene ball, paper scraps, water. Most widely used in China is the polystyrene and sawdust.

According to the molding way the production methods could be classified to be following categories :

  • 1. forged hand-formed, mostly used in the manually production.
  • 2. pressure molding machine, which is widely used.
  • 3. rejection of the material
  • 4. casting method

What is Insulating Firebricks and  What features they have ?
  Author : Rick Sun        North Refractories.Co.LTD.  2011.4.12

Insulating fire brick(IFB) with a application temperatures from 2,300°F (1,260°C) to 3,200°F (1,760°C). North Refractories Co.LTD produce typical grade bricks and meanwhile accept orders for specific thermal and physical requirements.

Made from high purity refractory clay and other ceramic raw materials by mixing, press-forming,

drying, sintering and machining. The IFB contain carefully-graded organic fillers

which are burned out during sintering to give a uniform controllable pore structure.

This technique makes product feature low thermal conductivity and excellent heat insulation.

Insulating firebrick can be applied as a hot face lining directly exposed to the heat or as a backup insulation layer in iron and steel mills, non ferrous foundries, petrochemical, ceramic, glass, cement and oil fired electric power generating plants constructions.

Advantages

Low Thermal Conductivity
The light weight and low thermal conductivity of NR IFB make it possible more thinner furnace walls in constructions, more efficient and lower cost with energy saved.

High Strength

The high compressive strength of NR IFB maintains a self-supporting stable structures at elevated temperatures. IFB could be used together with dense fire bricks to improve the strength of whole construction.

Low Heat Storage
Low heat storage results in a more fewer fuels will be used during a rapid cooling and heating operation than the dense bricks.

High thermal shock resistance
NR IFB has a good performance in preventing spalling which is adversely for the life span of furnace linings.

High Purity

NR IFB is low in impurities and because of this they will enhance the refractory performance in many furnace constructions with a controlled atmosphere.

Precise Dimensions

NR Insulating Fire Brick are machined to precise dimensions which could make the refractory linings more quickly, exactly and easily , the more precise the less heat loss through the joints.

General Applications

Recommended for use as primary hot face refractory linings or as back-up insulation behind other refractories in furnaces, flues, kilns and similar high temperature industrial equipment.

I've been talking localy to smithys , up in our north cold , and was informed the green cops don't like the foundry in non-corp hands. and some have been

PUNISHED $$ " FOR THEIR OWN  GOOD."

can anyone say that this is anymore health hazzard than stick weilding or alum weilding.

not that i would do any of these without adiquate ventalation.

this kinda steps on opotunity to generate $ to self support hobby wrks.
