I just came across about 40lbs of 304 stainless castings. I thought about melting down have anybody worked with stainless.

i think jerry has but he is using a thermite furnace. stainless melts at a much higher temp than what we can hope for in our propane/oil furnaces.

Thats what I was thinking, I guess its an excuse to look into induction furnace.

304 grade contains 18% Chrome and 8% Nickel plus small amount of Mn and Si. carbon has to be maintained below 0.08%, the rest is Fe.
It has to be melted in Induction Furnace or other type which can go upto 1600 degs.
It has to be solution treated (to dissolve all carbides).
It is shining normally but rusts in corrosive atmosphere.
Any doubts, please ask.
