Hello all,
I've been a model builders for many years now, have been doing plastic and resin most the time with a dabble in die cast now and then but have never really modified the metal itself.
I'm looking for some help and or info on how to best modify the metal of die cast models.
The plan I have is to join 2 die cast models but not sure how to join the metals.
I don't have access to a welder so any tips or info on the way to go about it would be much appreciated.
I'm not sure what metal is used, wether it's aluminium, steel etc
I have been suggested to try solder with hi flux... if anyone can confirm that, that would be good.
I have very little room to work with on the inside so bracing the pieces together as a permanent solution is not really workable, bracing them to fill the gap was my thoughts but again, I'm not sure how to actually join them.
Cheers
bodgy

Interesting idea you have. I think most die cast models are cast in zinc. I have seen and tried to use zinc welding rods but did not have very good luck with it. Soldering zinc didnt work out to well either. What did work was to clean the zinc and electro plate it with flash copper from caswell and then solder it up. the copper is electroplated on to clean zince then the solder sticks to the copper very well.
But maybe good old fashoned epoxy is the way to go????

i suspect the metal to be a zinc alloy....its very hard to weld as it melts just like ordinary lead /tin solder..... might be easier to make a new one!
