How to melt metals 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Hi there,
i´m looking for answers, as - How can i melt metals like aluminium, brass or copper.
I learned a lot from youtube and other internet sites, but i have many doubts like -how to build or buy an used oil burner and what to add to the melted metal to put in ingots.
Sorry for my English language failures, but i don´t write since high school - 23 years ago.
Thanks a lot to who can help.

Put you doubts aside, its much easier than you think.
firts things first, what are you planning on useing for a fuel source and how much metal are you planning on melting weight wise for a single pour?

hi and welcome to the forum. forget copper to start with....start with aluminium and progress to brass. ...then copper and cast iron!!!!!! be on the lookout for a small castiron pot! they make a good container to start melting in....they dont last long but long enough so you can get organised around the hot stuff. as a1 said." what do you want to cast???

Thnks for reply,
Now, & after reading the "metal casting zone" e-mails, i know what means "casting metal",
in this moment i´m just worried to melt some tones of aluminium, copper and brass scrap in ingots, because in Portugal appears some gangs from Romenia and Croatia, that only looking to steal clean scrap as mine, but if i have all melted in ingots i can store it in less space and more secure.
There´s where my doubts starts :
Do i have to add something to the liquid metals ? Or just melt them and put in bars/ingots ? In the melting process some hard aluminium loose propertyes ?
As i am an old/closed industryes dismantler, in each month i colect and clean many kilos of metals ( not including simple iron ) ...so i guess an waste oil burner must be the best bet - "metal quantity/ melting time". Does anyone can help me telling me how to build one ? I have all materials & tools needed to build a big furnace, i have indutrisl propane and compressed air too.
This will be my first step, after i put all in ingots and in a safe place, then i will start the Casting Art, maybe seeling a big part of the ingots/ or not depending at the Europeans prices at that time.
Thanks a lot for your simpaty and good will to help.

I assume that you sell your scrap metal to a dealer, you need to ask them if there is any difference in price they pay you for the different grades of aluminum and if casting it into ignots will lessen its value or not. you also need to consider the cost of fueling your foundry as the cost of fuel (if not free) will also effect the profit you make on your scrap. Let us know your thoughts on this then we can assist you further.
