Hi there 1 Year, 9 Months ago
I am totaly new to metal casting and metal working for that matter,

that being said I am interested in learning how to build a listeroid diesel engine from scratch

no I do not take on the easy projects

so where was I .. ahh yes

I have attempted to melt aluminum and had it get to a 'wet' type state but mostly it oxidised (??) my furnace was not insulated and the fuel was wood with a few pieces of charcole thrown in with a hair dryer acting as my blower, it was more of a " ok lets test this idea out and see what happens, and where I need to go from here to get to where I need to be "

I am attempting to build a waste oil burner capable burner/furnace and any advice in that area most welcome

Hi Ray,

Have you seen "The Artful Bodger's Iron Casting Waste Oil Furnace" by Colin Peck?

I made my furnace following this book useing a 60l oil drum as the outer caseing. I find this works well.

If you want to continue with your present furnace I would sugest you use just charcoal as fuel not wood.

Good luck.

Peter.

my present furnace is not ment to last more then another few tests, I have today aquired several 50 gal drums that I will be creating my next furnace in,

yes I have seen his site and also backyardmetalcasting, and I am sure I will be reviewing both and several more sites before I consider my next steps

wood works just fine for melting aluminum, you just need to build a nice big fire and get a good bed of coals going then use them for the melt. take a look at my elcheapo furnace set up here on the forum

Welcome to the forum.

Try to get a small pool of Aluminum to feed into and cover it with some Charcoal to keep Oxygen off of it. What is it you are melting? Cans are bad for oxidizing.
