Can K-bond hold up to thermite iron? 2 Years, 8 Months ago
Hi y'all.

The iron temp from a big thermite run can reach 5000 F.
Question: Can an intricate mould made from k-bond hold it's fine detail against 5000 degree iron?

I hope so, but I'll defer to your expert opinions. Thanks, Jerry

I am leaning towards the "I doubt it" side, the main component of K-bond or any other material like that is still silica or olivine sand. The melting point of silica is 3110F and the boiling point is 4046F. You could probably make a mold with it, but as far as fine detail, you would have serious fettling work to do afterwards (chipping off the burned/fused sand). Might be better to make a ladle and let it cool a bit to closer to a good pouring temp.

If it ain't broken or substandard I don't own it.

Thanks.
Any suggestions on what would work for thermite, lost wax type casting mold ?

You may consider some sort of high temp vessel to hold the metal in until it cools to a more reasonable temp to pour. At that temp you will probably burn out all the carbon and silicon and be left with almost pure iron. Maybe that's what you want.
