Round wax rods 6 Months, 4 Weeks ago
I set out to make some round wax rods this week. I tried to make a plaster mold and it failed and broke apart.
Then I got a 3/8" straight copper tube, plugged the end and poured wax in. I put it in the freezer to cool and then warmed the outside and some slid right out. Others needed more warming and a harder push with the ramrod. I cut some vinyl tubing down one side, taped it with electrical tape and filled it with wax. It worked but not as well as the copper. I broke up some of the rods trying to get them out.
I'm using some of the Beeswax I've had around for years. Some of it I added Stearine as a hardener.

I stopped at the hobby store last night and picked up a 1/4" brass tube, 12 inches long. Also, a wooden dowel that just fit, it was 3/16". I looked at the 1/8" tubes, but I think that would require injecting the wax, and may be hard to get the wax out. I'll see how the new one does.

The 1/4" tube didn't work as well. I had a hard time getting the wax out. I froze it and warmed it a little, no good. I finally had to heat it almost to melting then I could push it out. Ended up with some nice rounds anout 1/8" dia.
I also need to get some metal rods to use as ramrods, I keep breaking the wooden ones. I'll shove one through my hand if I'm not careful.

maybe for smaller sizes you could use pipe that has been cut longitudinally allow for easier removal? then you could tape it shut while pouring. Might be worth a try if you really need the smaller ones.

The small ones would be good for vents and such so the mold will fill completely. I think I'll try injecting wax into a bucket of cold water using a large syringe with different sized tips.
I also discovered that beeswax is a lot easier to use than the white candle wax.

That sounds like a fun thing to try.
