Polymer Clay - Can it be used instead of Wax? 2 Years ago
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can help, has anyone tried to do the lost wax casting method using a polymer clay (cured) object?
Is it possible?

I have a very delicate item to be cast, but I don't know if I want to go ahead attempting to use a lost wax method in case the cured polymer clay will not melt away and just botch up.

Has anyone tried this?

Or perhaps I should re-cast this item into wax and start over?

Any answers would be SUPER appreciated!!

Hi Vincere
I feel it possibly would be a lot of work, mount this item on sprues, invest the flask ,hours of burnout time, cast, either with vacume or in a swing arm only to find it hasen't worked, If you have something else in the same medium maybe you could see if it melts and burns when put into a open fire. If not don't use it.

Best to make a RTV mould of the item and make a pattern in wax , then it is sure to burn out and cast. JOHNCAST

I don't know what the polymer would do at high temps, but I've burnt enough of it by leaving it in the oven too long. It doesn't seem to melt, just turns black and cracks. It may even swell up some when over heated. I would sure do some experiments first, before I ruined a good pattern. I use beeswax and have trouble getting it all burned out.
