Lost Wax Rose 6 Months, 1 Week ago
I bought some little wax roses at the craft store and attached a sprue to it. I used a mix of Plaster of Paris and Silica flour 4:1 and molded it in a paper cup.
For the burnout, I put it in my furnace while I was preheating it with propane to test the oil burner. Just left it in there for about 20 minutes. It got red and checked on the out side. I took it out when it quit smoking. The inside looked clean and white. It looked so good I grabbed some Aluminum and my little crucible and melted it. I kept the mold hot on top on the furnace over the exhaust. Then I just poured it in. The aluminum didn't pour well, I had grabbed the low Si stuff by mistake. But it came out OK. The candle had some glitter stuff on it and it collected at the opening so the sprue broke off. The glob on top is from an air bubble because I pulled the wick out and didn't plug its hole. The air must have came up as I pour the plaster in.
I'm pleased, the mixture seamed to hold up well and came off easily.

Testing investments to try to finish the USMC project. I'm going to try another one this weekend.

Round #2

Set up a 3 rose spray, with different sized stems/sprues. The yellow dot in the center is where I dripped some wax in to plug the wick hole. I used a 2:1 ratio of PoP and Silica flour, seemed to have more cracking issues. Probably from the fast burnout.

I got real brave and decided to use brass. I did a slam bam burnout again, probably 30 minutes total, until the mold was white inside and quit smoking. Then melted the brass. I didn't take into account that the furnace was already hot and the brass melted faster than I expected. It kind of got away from me. I had a firestorm in the top of the crucible, swirling, molten bright yellow with occational flashed of white light. That was the zinc burning out. I took it out of the furnace and let it set a little to settle down. Then poured. The one with the 3/8" sprue was the only one to fill, the other 2 partially filled and froze off. Oh well, bigger sprues and maybe some vents.

It was really hot, I think I cooked out some of the Zinc. Before I put the wire wheel on it, it was all copper colored, like the base.
