Hi John from the other side of the globe (and a bit north...). If you can get reasonably fine sand locally and some sort of dry powdered clay (real bentonite would be best, but others will work) you can easily make your own greensand a lot cheaper than you can buy it. If you have screenprinters somewhere near you you may be able to buy or beg a piece of fine mesh screen from them to build a sieve . 90 or 110 mesh would be great, if you can't find that, just get the finest screen you can and sift your sand through that. A bacon spatter screen works pretty well if that is the best you can find. Mix the clay in to the sifted sand (sift the clay too to get rid of chunks) at about seven or eight pounds of clay to 100 lbs of sand. (6 to 10% clay/sand by weight) Mix it together thouroughly and slowly add water until it just holds together when you squeeze it. Put it between a couple of tarps on the ground and walk over it, packing it together. fluff it back up, turn it over a few times, and repeat a few more times. Let it sit covered or in a sealed container for a day or so and there ya go.
If you are looking for petrobond or Kbond, you will have to buy that pretty much pre-mixed. There are a few other Aussies on here who may be able to tell you where to get that.

hi john and welcome to the forum from sunny queensland. follow odd ducks advise for making your own. bentonite clay is sold at the stock produce stores. there is a mob not far from me that sells petrobond but im still to check it out. im happy enough with my sand that i made. if push comes to shove i can mail some clay down to you but postage is a killer. you can get a 20kg bag of clay for about $10.

Thanks for the help ,xlchainsaw, and oddduck. Your imfo was a great help. No foundy will be of any help here most say they use a resin type sand now not a green sand I have been working on a mix of my own at present but am a little unsure whether it will work,I have to ram up cope and drag to see. Just a small paper weight to cast in brass, maybe some house numbers after that. I hope to get a good enough casting that I can file up emery, and polish. My try this weekend Thanks Johncast
