Creating textures on wax carving before casting 2 Years, 10 Months ago
Hi,

Does anyone know how to get a convincing "Rough stone" appearance on a wax model before casting?

Thanks.

Hmm thats a new one, most of us are going for smooth. The only thing I can think of is heating something up with the texture you are looking for and placeing it on the wax to burn the shape into it. Either that or give it to my dogs for about 5 min.

Yeah,
The dogs wont do...

I need to get a good stone texture, but heating up a stone or something with "stony" texture will give me the mirror image of the stone texture and it will look reversed... pits become humps and "valley" becomes "mountain".

I guess I'll have to try and get the texture onto another surface and then heat that up and imprint it. get the reverse image on the casting wax... hmmmmmm

Ok, how about wax a stone with release agent, make a mold off it and then cast the wax.

Hi Animus
If the wax model is fairly strong try taking a small piece of sand paper , of say rough grit 320 ,220, or rougher and impress the grit surface of the sandpaper into the wax ,just dab the surface here and there till the right texture is acheived. If a sandstone style finish is required build up the wax a little, here and there, then use the same technique. I had to make a sandstone appearence for a scale model last month and used this techique into clay putty and got a good result. Might work for you?
