Metal Casting Zone

This is a technique I am going to be working on. I used play sand as an investment and the pipe insulation foam that can be compressed and expand back up. The spout is a copper pipe. unfortunately i did not pull the pipe in time so it got stuck.

That's pretty cool. Man in a bottle with his head stuck in a pipe.
That would be the one thing to overcome, how to cut off the sprue.

I guess the plan was to pull the pipe with the metal hot. It would make for a funny head. The other idea is to use the pipe from the bottom but then the dude would be upside down in the bottle. needless to say it is a work on progress.

The other idea of course is to blow the bottle around the sculpture. I saw some great bronze castings in bottles that were done that way.

bought some new pipes for this this week. found a thinner copper piping that might make it a little easier. I think I might try to make a ship of some sort because it would fit the "in a bottle" theme better. Maybe a sub.

Was the foam surrounded by sand for the mold?
Did you preheat the bottle?

Was the foam surrounded by sand for the mold? the foam was surrounded by normal play sand.
Did you preheat the bottle? the bottle never gets heated. there is a thin layer of sand between the hot pipe and the bottle neck. I have only tired the one time but no shattering then.
