No i haven't looked at that thread... Do you by chance have a link to it?

As for worrying about an explosion goes... I'm really not too worried about that either!

I plan on routing the regulator plumbing up to the back of my cart.. Where it will meet two shut off valve's, One before the regulator.& after... I don't plan on opening the top of the furnace with the burner running either... I'm going to feed the materials needed through the top hole into the crucible... Then once the temp is up to par i will shut down the propane. then attend the crucible... By doing it this way there is no chance of an explosion at all... The propane tank will also be enclosed in a sheet metal compartment behind the furnace..

I think you all for being concerned about my safety... But i do believe i have this part covered very well...

NOW... Beings where talking about propane safety... What you all think about the standard gas grill design... The propane tank is mounted directly below the burner?????

Now here's an accident waiting to happen!!

You have a point, but then again the average barbecue isn't operating at 2000F+. Talk about well done...
That site I told you about is this www.artfulbodgermetalcasting.com/

Not to mention a bbq grill regulator is only 1-2 psi not the 10-35 you will be useing.

keep in mind that the safety advice being given to you is by people who dont wear gloves or long sleves and could probably be caught casting while wearing flip flops and shorts (on a nice day)
but hey we do give good safety advice lol

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cures!

anyway nuff said, come on and get that baby fired up!!!!

Yeah I'm hoping to have all built and good to go shortly after the holidays... I'm currently building it in our old basement... now my daughters home... I'm lucky to get out there a few days a week to work on it.. and many other projects as well.. I'm also building a new drag racing car for next season that's required alot of my free time...

I would never attempt to cast anything without wearing the proper clothing.. I have a new RU-6 Welding suit ready to go.. as well as gloves and a respirator...

I did manage to get a little more done to the furnace cart last night... I'm currently building the swing brackets for the lid... Once i get them built I'm going to build a T- stop that will support the lid as well when it's in the fully upright position..

Then once i get them built I'm going to get the refractory materials and get that task done.. Then I'm going to build the crucible from 5'' black steel pipe and 1/4'' flat stock steel...

Here are a few recent shots of it!

View with one arm attached to trial fit prior to cutting to length.. there will be two arms supporting the lid.. It's a little blurry but i think you'll get the idea here!

Well guy's it appears many of you here aren't the outgoing type ehh? Is my casting project really that boring?

Anyhow> I now have the lid braces built and welded in place.. I'm going to attach them to the lid next.. Then i will start on attaching the wire to the inside of the lid & lay out the pattern for the refractory material on the bottom.. I also changed my mind on lifting the lid.. I am going to install a 12V ATV winch the will be mounted atop the handle area.. i will then install handles via both sides of the cart frame to move it around...

Your project is coming along very well. We just like to look at pictures.
What kind of Insulation and refractory are you going to use?

Thanks!

I would post more pics here but posting one per post is a hassle. There are many more on my site!

I plan on trying this type of refractory material. Anyone here use this technique.. and if so, has it held up well?

I have been to your site, it is very interesting, I'd like to see some races sometime. Do you put up a schedule or anything?

That mix should be OK for Aluminum but won't hold up very well for anything hotter. You may use Quick-set concrete, it has more Alumina in it. I got regular refractory so I can do Brass and Iron. But it's about $50 a bag now.

Thanks! My site is dedicated to my Beretta build only... It's not going to be raced, it will be a show car. However! I may light up the tires from time to time. but I'm not going to race it... I am planing on building an all out drag car next year, it will be a 1932 Bantam altered dragster,,it will also have a 1/3 scale blown V8 engine in it.. except it will be beefed up with a larger cam and block bored with fitted over sized pistons.. aprox 30 over! It should be one wild ride...

I don't know if your into 1/4 scale cars or not, I thought i would post some links for you to check out if so..

Just to name a few... as you have probably noticed by now.. 1/4 scale is not a cheap man's hobby.. as a matter a fact.. I've known a few that have over 20 grand invested in one car alone... To much for my blood!!

Concrete!! I read in a few casting forums that concrete wont hold up and can even explode... Did you mean Cement??

No updates on the casting furnace yet.. I should have some free time this weekend to get some done on it... I can't wait to get this thing built and start the pouring process... I'm sure i will stumble there as well...
