hi Gordon,
I'm also new to the site and casting of Aluminium.
A bit of home work on the net and I found the mixture for Alloy flux. Have just gone looking for it again, however it is a combination of Sodium Choride (table salt) and Potassium Chloride (I think) in a certain mixture or ratio, I have purchased 25 kgs of each from a chemical supply company (this should keep me going for years) and am about to experiment
Will let you know the results,
Cheers for now,

South Australiahi graham and welcome to the forums from a fellow aussie.

actually what you are making is readily available in the supermarket known as "lite salt"for $2.75 a container. to use it as a flux you need to melt it! this turns it into a liquid which you pour out. it solidifies and you break it up into lumps. to use you need to attach a lump onto a peice of wire and you whish it around in your melt. it works to clean up the metal.

if your metal is clean you dont have to use it. a small lump of charcoal thrown into the melt will do the same thing so i dont use the salt any more.
