What are these? 1 Year, 10 Months ago
Hi All,

Can anyone identify these.

They appear to be sand cast iron, however I would like to know their provenance before using them in an iron melt.
The two on the left weigh 103g (3 1/4oz) each, and their volume is 15ml (aprox. 0.9cu.in.)
The one on the right weights 125g (4oz), and its volume is 18ml (aprox. 1.1 cu.in.)
Thank you in advance.

Peter.

You could do a grinder spark test. Put it on a grinder and if the sparks are dull orange and break up into little sparks it probably iron.
Look up Blacksmith spark test, it should have the sprk colors for mild steel, high Carbon and cast. I can't remember all of them.
I cheat, I use a spectrometer.

Here's a site that explains it better than I. There are others, and Wiki has a section on spark tests. I couldn't find any with color pictures, I thought it would show up better.

Hi Jammer,

I did grind one and it sparked much like iron, however the shape and size of them made me wonder if they may be a special composition ( like high silicone iron for instance).

Grey cast usually has between 1.5 and 2% Silicon and about 3% carbon. If you can get to the melting temp it pours like water.
