TOPIC: Using Garnet for sand

Using Garnet for sand 1 Year, 8 Months ago
Question...

I have access to a large amount of fine grained garnet. it's used as blasting media at our plant. We have for years simply scooped it up and basically 'dumped it out back'. I was hoping that someone could tell me if there is any reason that it couldn't be used as the base in sand casting. It's all even grained and essentially clean.

any thoughts would be appreciated...
Thanks

Garnet is a silica based sand, it should work fine for green sand. Run it through a screen to get out any large pieces or dirt. Being free doesn't hurt either. Mix it with some bentonite and give it a shot.
