Raw material selection ? 1 Year, 2 Months ago
hi everybody,
My first question here, does the raw material ( scrap metals ) influence much on cast iron hardness? i had 2 pouring this week ( ventilated disc rotor ), the first badge was ok hardness is around 160-180 bhn ( which i guess ok? ) using 100% angle bar scrap ,and then the other badge use 30% high tensile extrusion wastage and 60% cast iron scrap rotors. The product turns very hard (hardness was 270-300 bhn ).help..

from my general knowledge .... using scrap metal and mixing it up without knowing exactly whats in it is a waste of time. most steel plants have there own steel "recipes" . i also beleive there are industry standards as well and... each country of the world have different standards. from a discussion here on the forums i learnt that china was having trouble meeting usa steel standards for example. if i did know the answer i wouldnt make it public and freely available there is a member that could answer your question.... but i for one would be shocked if he did....he would risk losing his job ...house .. and family . its a bit too much to ask for from a public forum dont you think????

Angle iron is usually a low carbon alloy, High tensile steel is higher carbon and cast is very high carbon, so if your mixing them your liable to end up with anything. Plus you have no idea of other alloys that may have been added. If you are doing brake rotors then I suggest you melt brake rotors.
