Need some help, not too sure how to desribe it... 1 Year, 9 Months ago

Well I'm making a casting of a mug (similar to a beer mug) in my metal shop class at school but I need some help. We have everything to make it, but I'm just not sure on how to do it. I have the mold I need, but if I just put in the mold I have and use it, it wouldnt be a mug, it would be a solid (no holow area to hold liquids) so how do I mold it so that it would be molded the right way. If more info is needed, I'll get pictures of the mold then maybe it would help but thanks ahead of time.

You need a core, the core would be shaped as the cavity inside the mug is. the core could be made useing sand and sodium sillicate core binder.

You could split a piece of pvc pipe in half and pack the sand/core binder mix inside it. Or you will have to make a wooden core box up to cast the core in.
You will also need to extend the pattern you are yseing so the core has a place to be supperted on the one end. Somewhere on this site i have a thing on here, I think under patterns, that has a core running thru it. take a look at it and you will see how the core works. Keep in mind your core will only be extended out on one side so you will have to make it pretty long so it can support itself.

Thanks, I figured it out but I only have core oil to use, we did a test with it and it seems to work but you wouldnt happen to know the ratio to use of core oil to sand?

Thanks I'll pm jammer about it. At the shop though we found a bunch of old cans of "core oil" but I'll pm him about and maybe he would know, if not we'll just do some more experiments and see what ratio works. Thanks for all the help.

yes, you are right
you need to make a sand core, that is the reason why, you donot have a hole or cavity.
It seems that you had found the way to solve problem,,

I think you should just get started.
And then you will find your way ultimately.
