Making Crucibles by Vincent Gingery review? 2 Years, 11 Months ago
Has anyone here checked out Vincent Gingery's Making Crucibles? It doesn't have any reviews up on Amazon, and I'm curious how helpful it is.

At $10 for 65 pages I'm feeling cautious. However, if it's anything like his uncle's (uncle, right?) books, then I'm thinking it's a must have for the library.

I purchased that book (and as time goes on probably the rest) and it does work. I think it is worth the ten bux. I made the mold and have made crucibles with them, my problem was that I tested them to destruction. My recipie doesn't like iron temps. A word of caution, make really sure that you ram the crucibles up evenly in thin layers, and I would make sure your walls are about a half inch thick. I made mine a bit on the thin side and they are difficult to ram up. My own fault, not the book's. Of course I had to take and modify mine... Definately worth the money, and will work great for aluminum or brass crucibles.

Kiddy,

Try this:
www.copperstarways.com/Downloads/MakingCrucibles.pdf
It's free and Vincent Gingery references it in his book.
hope this helps.

Excellent info!

I did end up getting the book. It's very good. I'm not sure I'm quite confident enough to make my own, but I may in the future.

I've got a PDF of the Gingery book also ... and you're right it's good.
I've yet to build a furnace and start melting.
I'm stuck trying to figure out the proper refractory material and am looking for a supplier of good 120 grit sand for molding.
