hi, i am taking a jewelry class and just recently did a lost wax casting and used bronze as my metal. from casting, there is a lot of black stuff all over my object and i was wondering if you knew any tips on how to easily remove the black stuff, as of now i am just sanding it, but if you know of anything different that would be great.
thanks,
Paige

Hi paigeann:

Black stuff on lost wax casting ,,,,,sounds right I've had this problem too on my brass castings. Do you have a ultrasonic cleaner, ?? these are a must to clean complicated casting trees for lost wax castings. When you melted your metal ready to pour did you add borax to the metal. I have done this on most casting runs and have finished with blackened brass castings and have been told not to add the borax powder when melting. I haven't tried this yet but might help you. Make sure the metal you are melting for a casting is extreamly clean before melting.

unfortunately i dont have an ultrasonic cleaner, just sandpaper at the moment. and i did at borax powder when melting down the bronze, so next i will try without adding that and see what happens. i guess ill just keep sanding away which is working, but really hard to get in all of the nooks and crannies. thanks for the reply
