is aluminum foil really all aluminum? Can I cast it? I have been thinking about collecting left over foil in the recycling and smashing it down real tight before melting it down. I would guess since it is so thin it might burn before melting if it is not compressed.

Not a dumb question, it is aluminum but you would have to alloy it with other metals to make it into a good casting alloy. I doubt it would be much good to melt but give it a whirl and let me know how it works out.

Maybe I will give it a try with some zinc I have on hand. I have not had much luck with coppers so I think I might not be able to get that going. I will report back.

perfectly okay!!! to melt and cast with. but!!!!!! from my experiment.... use only brand new foil from the supermarket!!! it hasnt oxidized like the used stuff. used foil has a lot of crap just like soda cans. you have to be able to skim the top to remove this. one night my son and ifolded up a whole roll of foil into sticks. you also need a "puddle" of molten aluminium to start with. its time consuming and with the cost of fuel it might not be worth your while
