Casting too thin 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Good Morning, all..
I have just received a ductile iron casting that is too thin. It comes from a newly created split two up patternplate. Is there any way to add something to the one side of the split pattern that will add thickness during casting? I need to add about 1/16" of thickness on one side of the pattern plate. I am not knowledgeable about the casting process. Due to shrinkage and warping correction the final pattern was to thin when the pattern plate was molded. The results are showing up after casting. Any solution to this problem short of having the split pattern remade? thanks

Maybe the Village Tinker or OddDuck can help with this, I'm not real familiar with patterns. It sounds like the pattern will have to be removed from the plate on the side that needs to be thicker, built up the 1/16" and reattached. This doesn't sound very easy to do after the pattern has been completed and sealed up, if it would be possible at all. Can you check with the pattern maker and see if they can help you.

Good Luck

Hi, can you post a picture of the plate?

If the part isn't thick enough, adding to the face of it where it hits the plate may help.

Are the locating pins long enough for the added thickness?

Thanks everyone...

Problem solved. We decided to remake the patternplate. We decided
we could actually use the thinner version. Lots of ideas were
kicked around, but, in the end we felt remaking the platternplate
was the best approach.

As a beginner, I am quite confused about this little repairing.
How can i get myself more knowledgeable about these things?
