im aware of others here that are working on the same project so i decided to obtain the books and give it a go and perhaps share the experience .im semi retired and i have built a small lathe when i was 18. it was made by fabrication and reading the book ive noticed that its very similar but bigger. so here is a pic of the books and im off scrounging.

I take it you will build the mill also? Why not the shaper in between? I will probably do all three.

That's great! I am getting closer to being able to actually light my furnace again. I am still trying to get some things done at our new place, so I still have not been able to do it yet. First thing on my list though is the second base and the bed. I have patterns already. I just need to cast them. How did you make the bed pattern?

That part looks good XL.
In reading other people's account of building a lathe, their main problem was accounting for shrinkage. Especially on on the larger pieces like the bed. You say you will fab that yourself. That sounds like a good plan. A good I-beam or railroad iron would make a good base.
