Yea, there is an odor. I live in the city too. I have had no complaints thus far, but that is not to say that I won't. You definitely have to set it up outside your garage not only for the smell, but the fumes. If you get oil from a restaurant though, I have heard that it smells like whatever it was cooking before you got it. That would even cover up your scrap smell and kill two birds with one stone. I use old motor oil though.I may try some cooking oil out myself just to see. I just have the motor oil handy so that is what I use.

i tried burning my waste cooking oil with the idea the neighbours would think i was having a bbq but as i dont have a oil burner just a open forge it resulted in great plumes of smoke. lol. but it did smell of fish and chips lol.
