Has anyone ever tried to make a crucible out of the same material they use to insulate thier furnace? It should work in therory right? if the insulation material ( fireclay, refractory cement, ) can withstand the flame/heat, why couldn you use it to make a crucible?

I have made a shallow bowl from some high temp refractory. it seems to hold up to heat pretty well. It has some surface checking but it doesn't look too deep. I really took it up to some high temps, probably over 2400 F. I've started a mold to try some crucibles, I'll start a post when I'm able to get back to work on it. I've been on the disabled list for the whole summer.
