SO I am new here, and really like the community so far. I was hoping some one here knows were I could buy or how I could make Tongs to lift my crucible which is the only thing holding me back from melting. I would just buy some from Budget Casting but 125 dollars is a lot for something i could probably build.

Welcome to the forum!

I might be a Redneck!

Here's my redneck tong. These do show simple construction of a basic lifting tong, but if the handles were bent out at 90 degrees, then it would increase the grip with the weight of the crucible. I have had a little trouble with slip when I start looking at where I'm going to set it. Not concentrating on the lift. I haven't drop any though.

For all you city folk, those are Post Hole Diggers.

Hi Sarsgarrs ,

These are my home made crucible tongs and pouring rings. The arms of the tongs are 5/8” steel rod, the crucible grips are slices of 4” galve water pipe, the handles of the rings are tubular steel from a push chair frame. All scrap.

I like those, I'm trying to come up with something that I can handle by myself but gets me a little bit away from the melt. My eye lashes are just growing back.
But, that was from peeking into the furnace. The heat came under my face shield, burnt my nose hairs and melted my eye lashes.
I am going with a similar pouring ring. Does yours ever slip when your trying to get the last drop out of the crucible?
