Once I mix my green sand, how long will it "keep"? My fear is that if I keep it sealed off and moist ... that it will grow mold. Mold is a problem here in the hot and humid climate of NC.

Why not try a styrofoam cup?

I tried that already. My first and worst foam casting, the ceramic tube cracked and metal went everywhere.

I call it "Jetson's Holiday"

My sand dries out all the time, too long between castings.
Maybe a little spray of bleach, to keep the mold down.

Hello,
Sand should not mold, unless you add something organic. We keep our sand in a airtight tote (35 gallon) and we have never had it mold or stink.
Have a lovely day!

Hi Firestix.
You might find these useful. Available from McMaster-Carr

Polishing stones for aluminum:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#47465a965/=2mthod

I ususally get the 180, 320 & 600 grit stones for polishing injection mold cavities
that have been edm'd.

Spray a little WD-40 for lubricant and they work well.

I also use 320 and 600 grit wet sandpaper for metals.
WD-40 again. Leaves a nice finish.

I looked up the MSDS for Lowe's (Quikrete) Playsand

http://www.quikrete.com/PDFs/MSDS-B4-Playsand.pdf

It is crystaline silica (quartz).

It's packaged wet to keep the dust down.
The MSDS encourages you to keep it wet, to avoid chronic problems
from breathing silica.

It's pretty funny that you can let your kids roll around in it,
but don't use it on the job!
