ive known about this type of furnace for years.

i got some carbon gouging rods to experiment with and im intending on powering it with arc welder. does anyone have any extra info???

Carbon arc gouging rods should work. If they get too hot, you could double them up.
Here's an old article on building the whole thing. Bowtie is optional, and face and eye protection is reqired.

thanks jammer.im also going to make a carbon arc torch. carbon gouging rods cost 60 cents each here and are 12 inches long.

They are usually very small melts. The more you want to melt, the better your insulation has to be. Some alloys may need an Argon shield to keep it from oxidizing.

I thought about doing one with my little graphite crucible. One electrode with a refractory lid and ground the cruicible. Let the arc go through the metal. That would probably need a gas shield and a pretty high amp welder.
