I'll put a few pictures of my bigger furnace on here. It might spark some ideas from some of you. The idea was for a tube area at the bottom for the flame to travel around before it came up around the crucible. Seems to work OK but no noticeable great increase in heat or effeciency. It was fun to build. Here's the design.

I used 2 pieces of duct work for the form and a pool noodle for the tube. Pool Noodles are great and they work good for lost foam too.

I screwed the outer shell back on and packed ceramic blanket around the hotface.

Capped it off and cast the lid.

This picture of the flame is hard to see, that isn't a crucible. It's a bowl about 1 1/2" deep sitting on the plinth block.

Oh, wait til you see mine. I shouldn't have made fun of yours.

I'm going to have to get the paint out too. Dress everything up a little.

The lid doesn't weigh much. It's a 3/4" hotface backed with ceramic blanket. I pick it up and turn it away from me and set it down to burn the grass. Weedkiller!
I can pick the whole furnace up by myself.

that is good about the weight! as i get older things are starting to get heavier????????one of the reasons i never lined mine was the weight. im lucky here in qld the average temp is 20 to 30 deg c ( 80 to 90 deg f) .im not sure if i could have the same success back home in tasmania where i spent the first 35 yrs of my life. (average temp 5 to 15 deg c. 60 to 80 deg f) without lining my furnace. seeing all these new furnaces been built im wonder just how high a melt i could acheive with a lined furnace here in qld??? give it a few months and we will see!!
