We need to melt, we need furnaces. There are different types and we need to talk about them.

wood is great! for a furnace it will need to be about the size of a big lump of coal and it must be dry! is the wood a hardwood or soft?? soft pine here is great but goes to ash. it has a very high heat! hard burns longer and hasnt as much heat however when you put the fire out you have some low grade charcoal which is great in the bottom of the furnace. its great for brass! (this is what i use plus my gas torch!)

thanks jammer. XL its a mix of everything as far as the wood goes. In fact theres enough wood in the burn pile to fuel my furnace for a long time thanks to the last two ise storms. Ill have to go down and sut some up so it can start drying out.

no problems. i use "chip board" particle board or what ever compressed wood chip boards are called. it contains a pva glue and burns with black carbon smoke if i close the vent. my recent furnace pics are burning this "chip board". you need plenty of draft and a larger vent for wood. but here is a thought!!! it sounds as if you have a bit of space around you!!! green fire wood every where??? why not just charcoal the wood! its easy! a new thread perhaps??? i have made charcoal for years and i still do. ive also made my own bbq type of fuel from ground charcoal and porridge!!!
