Started out with Insulating Fire Brick I got off Craig list for $1 each. The guy said they were used but you can't tell. They are from a Fostoria glass Kiln that shut down. They have set outside, under plastic, for a couple years.
I used a table saw with an old blade for cutting grooves and installing the kiln elements. I got them from E-bay.
I coated the brick, before I wired it, with some furnace refractory I dug out of the trash at work. It's a high Alumina coating for the reheat furnace, rated at 2300 F, same as the IFB. I put it together wet and chinked the seams with ceramic blanket.
There are 2 sets of elements rated at 120v, 1500 watts. Wired together for 240v, 3000watts. Or I can just run the bottom set or the top set on 120v. I plugged it in enough to tell it gets hot. I need to insulate the contacts and put an outer shell on it, also make up a lid.
It's setting on a printers galley tray lined with more firebrick. It only weighs about 20#.
