Re:Waste oil burner 2 Years, 12 Months ago

Here's a waste oil burner I made last summer. It's about the same, oil comes down the center tube and I have a 120 CFM blower. I have only used it to fire the furnace and the last shot is where I turned the oil up to see some flame. I pre-heated with propane. On a second fire I couldn't get the heat up and figured I didn't pre-heat enough. I had a lazy flame and oil in the bottom of the furnace. Yuck!!

rather than drip feed your oil i would be "spraying" it into it as you havent made provision for a "flare" in your design you are using the refactory lining as a "flare" so yes you would need to have the lining red hot before useing oil.if you could set a small fire (bbq charcoal)in the bottom to provide a ignition source in the early stages or a gas "pilot" burner or something to ignite the oil fumes ,csat iron in a graphite pot wouldnt be out of the question .

Here's one I'm playing with now. It's a siphon feed waste oil burner. It uses about 20 psi air to pull and atomize the oil as it exits the end. No pre-heat is nessasary unless your trying to fire it in below freezing temps. The weather has been so crappy I haven't got to try it much. With a good blower it should reach cast temps easily. I made the little turbo to help spin the air. These are Hago nozzles and adapter, usually on e-bay and cost about $50 US.

thats more like it! it may tax your air compressor tho. if it does you may want to consider a pressurised container containing your oil and just use one line into your furnace. similar to "airless" paint spraying .( im a retired house painter!)

I built a waste oil feed the other day and first attempt has seen me struggle to make enough temp to melt aluminum.I think it is because I too was using a hair dryer and the volume of air is too low.

I am searching around for an old vacuum cleaner to salvage the blower out of for the next attempt.

I used a 4.5kg gas bottle as the fuel cell and just for ease of use built a siphon tube into so I dont have to turn the cylinder upside down to get the oil to feed. I add 1psi of pressure from my compressor to get the feed going.

I will post up some pics when I get the kinks ironed out.

I did get that Hago burner fired up. It put out a very intense heat. I didn't have the piping right so I didn't have good air flow from the blower. Still it was very hot!! That nozzle was on loan to me and I had to send it on. Now I can't find anyone with them in stock.

This shows the set up a little bit. I'll be glad when my cameraman is out of school.
I just put the blower hose up to the opening next to the piping.

This picture is at the highest temp. I was doing a little experiment, more on that latter.
