Waste oil burner 3 Years, 2 Months ago

OK. Here is mine. I went to Home Depot (ssssshhhhhh, I'm a Jimmie Johnson fan) and got the parts, putt'em together and BAM!!!! works like a charm. I started building my furnace to be fired by charcoal. Then decided that used motor oil was cheaper for me to come by. I notched the tuyere to accommodate the burner so the blower will still fit flush. (see pic) It just drips into the furnace body and burns like crazy when the blower is on.

There is nothing more to the design at all. Yes, I build a small wood fire (just enough wood to get it lit). I put the crucible on top after the wood is burning pretty good. Then I turn on the blower. Then I turn the valve on and let it drip and close the furnace lid. I timed it the other day. from the time I started the wood fire til the time I was pouring was about 30 min. That includes extra time because I was feeding it scrap window frames. If I started with ingots and used nothing else, it would be shorter.

this is very impressive to say the least. i scored a small blower the other day and some more propane tanks. i woulnt mind a waste oil furnace. 30 min matches my gas /charcoal furnace/forge so i see no reason why brass cant be considered

It would work. I think it takes me that long because I only use a hair dryer for my blower. I bet if I turned up the fuel, and used a larger blower it would get hotter than my furnace would handle.

First of all im new to waste oil burners so some advice would be great. I have a gast regenair blower with an output of 98cfm that I would like to use. My question is what volume of oil will I need for a furnace that has a 12"x12"X10" chamber. I was also wondering if I could use a burner to to vaporize the oil and only use the vaporized oil to run the furnace. Any advice or thoughts would be great.

ive read of many designs but the simple one appeals to me. a small fire is started in the furnace by wood and then the oil is sprayed onto it ,add the blower and away you go. a valve is needed to control the oil. trial and error would be needed to "tuneup" your blast.

Not much trial and error is even needed. All I have to do is open it up to where there is just a trickle and that is enough to get it hot enough. It is gravity fed, so it has no real pressure on it. The only air is from the blower, and that is more for the fire itself. I love mine. If I build another furnace, I will do the exact same thing again. If I did anything different, it would only be to try and find smaller pipe to make it with and make the tuyere and burner as one piece. I did it the way I did because the furnace started as a charcoal so I already had the existing tuyere, so I had to retro fit it to receive the burner.
