Your using waste motor oil? Sounds good, you must have a large compressor. What pressure are you feeding into to torch head?
I have a pretty cool neighbor. He's a semi-retired shop teacher, and is drawn to the flames. He likes my homemade furnace but then tells me he has a Speedymelt buried somewhere in his barn. They made them stop melting in school. He'll probably dig it out and bring it over for me to get it running.

Congratz.
One concern I would have is that on a normal paint sprayer, the canister for holding the paint(in this case oil) is very close to the spray nozzle. If you are getting this baby poking into the furnace, how much heat is your supply canister going to see from the ambient heat.
Just a thought, you may have already addressed this issue.

The burner itself is about 16" long with six feet of flexible air and fuel line between it and the tank. Sorry, I meant the atomization looks like that of a paint gun, not the set-up itself.

If everyone could pick through everything that anyone's ever thrown away, no one would ever have to buy anything ever again.

I have been too busy lately to fiddle with my new furnace/burner design, so I haven't had time to set it up to take pics. This weekend has been cold and wet, further thwarting any chance at melting. As soon as I get a minute, I'll post. I know some of you are looking forward to seeing what I've done.

i understand time delays with this hobby only too well. first you have to to have the spare time and then its weather permitting and then you have to remember the camera!!!!!!its a bit hard around hot stuff to take pics as most lenses are made from plastic. take your time and stay safe.

Hi eurus!
I'm really interested in your burner design, can you fill in a few gaps for me?
Firstly, did you need to preheat the furnace before firing the oil burner? I'm wondering how you got the oil/air mix to ignite.
Secondly on construction, I'm guessing you used not only the tip but the mixer part of the ocy/acet torch. Otherwise I think it would be really difficult to get the oil and air to the right parts of the tip. I'm also guessing that you're using the valves on the mixer body to change the air/oil ratio. Which is a great idea! you should be able to setup the mixture perfectly with some fiddling.
Thirdly, pressures. What soft of air pressure and oil pressure are you using?
And great work by the way! I really like the sound of this setup, so much so that I think I will have a crack at making one myself.
cheers!
Damo.
