here's a steam engine cyl I just cast. I pickled the old brass scraps before I melted them. Makes a heck of a difference !!

Do you mean pickled as in removing Chrome plating or just removing oxidation, dirt and such?

I have some Chromed parts that I'm debating on.

The part looks great, I just wish that brass looked like brass in the pictures.

that looks great aonemarine! im behind with my forum posting. ive been doing heaps of small brass castings for my "homecast" steam engine! i cast brass boiler endcaps, engine frames and flywheels and the cylinder block. i like your design. did you use "petro bond" sand??? it came out very clean. removing surface oxide with pickling is a good idea if it old brass.

the pickle was a sulpheric acid and water mix just to clean it off. turned it to a copper color, guess it ate the zinc off the surface
havnt had to deal with chrome yet....

Yes, that was the petrobond. I need to get another battery for my other camera so i can get a close up, my old camera doesnt have zoom or macro mode so its pretty limiting.

did the petrobond burn badly against your aluminium casting.
