molding my brass flywheel 3 Years, 1 Month ago
i was asked on a previous post to show how i molded my brass flywheels. i will do my best to explain.

the flasks are made from aluminium and if you look carefully you will see a blackish smudge around the top where the sprue was. the black just washes of and the aluminium is un harmed.

the flasks are 6 inches long 5 inches wide and each half is 1 1/2 deep. i had to make a large wooden flask to cast them in. each half took 1 kg of aluminium. 500grs was taken up with the sprue and gates and remelted for the next. i made six full flasks and really i need some more now that i know i can use them for brass

yes that is my sand that i havent mulled up since it was used. i use it for such tasks till it becomes totally dry. i then sift it ready for the next cast.i keep my sand totally dry and just use a large cooking pot to mix up the sand with my electric drill.

a point i must add . if you are to cast them make sure you leave the inside of the flask very rough! this gives the sand something to hold onto! i made some of the same design from metal. left smooth the sand wouldnt hold. i had to run a bead of weld around the inside to get them to work.
