Metal Casting Zone

I've been trying to melt brass for casting using an (unpluged) coal forge. I put a hole in a cast iron crucible then tried a different approach using a steel crucible surrounding the fire in a large 1" thick steel coupling. Again the brass did not melt and I put a hole in that crucible. Obviosly, this is my first attempt at melting metal in a coal blacksmith forge. Are my attempts to use a coal forge for brass going to work?

it sure will work!you are using the same equip as myself .(check my post) how thick was the bottom of your steel pot????it will need to be at least an eighth of a inch, did you flux the bottom.??? you will need to flux the bottom. i used a teaspoon of brazing flux (the borate type) in the bottom. the metal glowed red and then started to melt. i added another two teaspoons of flux before i poured.you need to use plenty of flux

i look forward to hearing about "how it went" since i proved that my gear was capable of melting brass i have had kgs of scrap brass given to me. also some requests for brass items.
