here and elsewhere lathe cuttings are debated as wether they are suitable to melt.i had a go awhile ago and concluded that they were a waste of time. however a debate else arose once again!! i had a bowl of cutting given to me.1.3 kg in total. the tip that was given to me was to wrap the cuttings in brown paper. start by having a molten puddle and dropping the small parcels into the crucible. so i gave it a go for second time. this time the cuttings melted but there was a lot of crap to skim off. i estimate i only recovered 40%. it took twice as long to melt and cast compared to working with say melting an ordinary garden tap. i did however get a result! i conclude that if nothing else is available and you need to cast then use them but i wont be saving my lathe cuttings.
the cuttings.
the blue bowl was almost full. i wrapped the cuttings in brown paper.
the result 4 flywheels and 4 cylinder blanks complete with sprues.
