Low Tensile Strength 1 Year, 8 Months ago
Hi All,

I’m new to this site and need help.

I have some aluminum pressure die cast parts, the material is ADC1. I have had these parts tensile tested and some of the parts have failed due to the tensile strength being low, (the tensile strength varies up to 25%).

What is the most likely cause for this variation in tensile strength?

Could it be?

1. Process fault, such as the cooling rate.
2. A design fault in the parts.
3. Wrong material
4. Does the copper content in the material influence the tensile strength.
5. Also, is ADC1 equivalent to AISi 12(
6. Or is it something else.
Regards,
PTH

ADC1 has 1% Cu, 12% Si and 1.3% Fe. Very similar to 413 US or LMN6 UK
AlSi12 Has 12% Si, 0.5% Fe, 0.1% Cu, and 0.55% Mg
AlSi11Cu2(Fe) is pretty close to ADC1
There are so many alloys just seaching the web can make your head spin.
Here's a couple PDF files I've found.
www.talum.si/pdf/foundry_alloys_chemical_compostion.pdf
www.delmarindustries.com/Alloy_Data.pdf

Both are packed with information.

As to the tensile problems, I think that could be "any of the above"
Is there any Heat Treatment or are you using any grain refiners like Titanium-Boron rods?
