Casting with cans 1 Year, 6 Months ago

I'm new to casting and made a simple charcoal furnace to melt aluminum. I melted two coke cans and simply poured them on the ground just to see if I would even be able to go through the process with my setup. It worked...I think. I noticed that the "ingot" was much heavier than the two cans that I melted down. Any reason for this?

will not be heavier but may seem more because it is so much thicker. I have used cans a bit. They leave alot of junk on the top of the melt but they do work.

Sure, Fire+Oxygen+Fuel=HEAT! The more the merrier. That may seem overtly simplistic, but is is really all there is to it. Your furnace may be as simple as a hole in the ground with a pipe to shoot air into it. It may be as complex as a store bought smelter. Get or make a good solid crucible, and good solid tools. NO WATER NEAR MOLTEN METAL EVER.
Refractories are just reflective surfaces that also insulate your smelter walls and make your burn hotter by reflecting heat back into it. Not always necessary but always recommended. Take your time and do not rush anything. If you knock over a crucible full of molten aluminum, you may end up with major burns, fires, or a terminal case of death. Nothing is worth rushing for. Remember you can always remelt it and try again.

If you can't figure out how to do it, ASK!
The only project too difficult is the one you are too lazy to finish.
